Is your hair very dry? The cause may be a lack of sufficient sebum. The cause may be insufficient sebaceous glands in the scalp, although dry hair quite often goes hand in hand with the problem of seborrhea. The hair may be excessively dry due to external factors: the weather, dry air in overheated rooms and hair care – the use of improper cosmetics, tight hair clips and rubber bands, too vigorous brushing.
Dry and damaged hair is one of the most common problems we have when it comes to our strands. It doesn’t matter how you damaged your hair: whether it’s through over-straightening, maybe bleaching, coloring, or a poor diet. What matters is that your hair is brittle, frizzy, dull, rough and has split ends. In a panic, we look for a solution to save our hair. So how do you care for extremely damaged hair? In today’s post, I’ll tell you what to look after and show you a list of products, which can be used to repair damaged hair.
My adventure with hairdressing started when my hair was completely destroyed. I dyed my hair, straightened it every day for many years, until one day I was completely burnt out: my hair started falling out and twisted into tiny spirals. It was such a stage that the hair could not have been more damaged. Not only was my hair thinning terribly, but I couldn’t control it. Straightening my hair didn’t help any more, it just made my head look even more unmanageable. I really didn’t know what to do, how to take care of it, what to use. I didn’t even hope that anything would help.
Today, richer in experience and knowledge, I would like to share with you how to repair damaged hair. I know exactly how it feels to have dry, damaged hair.
How do I repair dry and damaged hair?
Step 1: Find the cause of damage and eliminate it
You can’t take care of your hair if you continue to expose it to the factors that have led to total ruin.
The most common causes of hair damage include:
Using hair styling appliances: straighteners, curling irons, wavers, etc.,
Colouring and bleaching of hair,
Perming,
Walking and sleeping with your hair open,
Using rubber bands with metal elements,
Improper brushing of hair: tugging, pulling, using unsuitable brushes,
Lack of hair care,
Exposing hair to cold,
Improper diet.
Step 2: Trim split and damaged ends
When our hair is breaking, we are even more afraid to cut the ends because we don’t want to lose hair length. We already see that we are losing some hair and the thought of cutting it paralyzes us: many girls don’t want short hair and even dream of having very long hair. Unfortunately, splits are going to pile up. Why? Split hairs snag on each other, making it harder for us to comb them. Frizz when combing in these cases is often unavoidable. If you trim your hair and treat it with a serum or oil, it will not be damaged as much. Extremely damaged hair may require trimming by several inches.
Step 3: Give Your Hair an Intensive Treatment
Damaged hair that is washed with shampoo alone will continue to deteriorate. Even the most nourishing silicone shampoo is not enough. The key to caring for such hair is a protein, emollient and humectant balance, which means we need to give our hair the right amount of moisturizing, protecting and building ingredients. First, however, check whether your hair is dry by nature or damaged, because the care will depend on the type of hair. Dry hair by nature does not like proteins, while extremely damaged hair should be cared for with protein-based products. Try to reach for masks, which have a rich composition. Avoid leave-in products and light conditioners. Intensive conditioning is essential for damaged hair and can be done even after every shampoo.
