Greenhouses are a great option if you have enough space in the garden. You have them in the form of a more or less large hut that can be fixed throughout the year, as well as easily removable structures that you can store during the hottest months.
• Place it where it receives more hours of direct sunlight so that the plants can continue to grow without problems and use a heater during the worst days of winter.
• A very good option is protective or thermal blankets, also called protection veils. It is a very fine material that once spread on the plants, increases its temperature by a few degrees. Also, it allows their perspiration, irrigation, and receive UV rays, something that you would not achieve with a simple plastic. Once the cold has passed, you can remove it to clean it and save it for when you need it again.
• With the same fabric, bags of different sizes are marketed to cover the tops of trees and shrubs in the orchard and garden.
• Do not forget to protect “the feet” from the plants: cover the ground with a mulch of pine bark or straw, which will raise the temperature of the earth by a few degrees.
• Potted plants are much more sensitive to low temperatures than those planted in the ground. Besides, ceramic or terracotta pots can crack if the temperature change occurs abruptly.
• To protect the pots, we recommend a very simple trick, which is to line them with cardboard or bubble wrap. Do not cover the drainage holes in case the situation lasts for days: it is important that the meltwater can find a hole to escape.
